Project Description

SB Projects were engaged by Australian National Maritime Museum, on a design and construct basis to rejuvenate the Wharf 7 Maritime Heritage Centre entry foyer and exhibition space, displaying various maritime objects and vessels. The objective of the rejuvenation program was to make the space more attractive to commercial tenants. The budget for this this project was $1,000,000. The site presented some unique challenges in the works program. The objects and vessels to be displayed were of significant cultural and heritage significance and protection of these was of paramount importance to the client and SB Projects during construction. The project objectives and deliverables that SB Projects provided were:

  • a high quality, culturally relevant space to the Foyer, Level 1a and Level 2 of the museum
  • co-ordination and consultation with all interested parties to develop an integrated design
  • quality contemporary finishes and materials in compliance with relevant BCA codes

The project involved the design and construction of extensive timber slat structures around the exhibition space, providing a functional space, empathetic to the historical maritime theme. SB Projects also undertook to design and construct the boat cradles and plinths required to display the heritage boats, and stands for historical engines.

A graphic ribbon wall, and graphics throughout the exhibition space also needed to be designed, produced and installed, involving extensive consultation and coordination of the approval process with museum curators.

Provision of creative lighting and audio visual solutions for the exhibition space, including data cabling and associated electrical installations.

During this rejuvenation program, SB Projects was responsible for identifying and resolving any design inconsistencies or construction issues, while maintaining a tight construction and delivery program of 14 weeks.

The Australian National Maritime Museum are delighted with the final result of this refurbishment, with objectives met beyond expectation.
